Announcement of the Public Viewing of the Buddha’s Tooth Relic

DatesOctober 15 (Wed)

This event has ended.

This year as well, we will hold a public viewing of the Buddha’s tooth relic on the following date.

Date and Time: Wednesday, October 15, Reiwa 7 (2025), 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM (Last admission is at 4:30 PM)

The Buddha’s tooth relic of Rokuouin was brought to Kamakura by Minamoto no Sanetomo, the third Kamakura shogun, from Nengren Temple in Lin’an (present-day Hangzhou), the capital of Song China, and was first enshrined at Daiji-ji Temple and later at Engaku-ji Temple. Emperor Gokōgon had part of it presented to Kyoto, and in 1374 (Ōan 7) it was bestowed upon Fumyō Kokushi and enshrined at Rokuouin.

Since the Buddha’s tooth relic arrived at the port of Hakata in Japan from China on October 15, October 15 of every year is designated as the “Shari-e,” a day of opening the doors and making offerings, and the relic is shown to the public only on this day.

Please take this once-a-year opportunity to visit.
