The Buddha’s Tooth Relic Handed Down at Rokuouin
The Buddha’s tooth relic of Rokuouin is said to have been brought to Kamakura by Minamoto no Sanetomo, the third shogun of the Kamakura shogunate, from Nengren Temple in Lin’an (present-day Hangzhou), the capital of Song China.
Later, Emperor Gokōgon had part of it presented to Kyoto, and in 1374 (Ōan 7) it was bestowed upon Fumyō Kokushi, the founder of Rokuouin, and enshrined at this temple.
It is also said that in later generations, Emperor Go-Nara, Emperor Ōgimachi, and Emperor Go-Mizunoo worshipped this Buddha’s tooth relic and made offerings to it.
Because the Buddha’s tooth relic arrived in Hakata from Song China on October 15, Rokuouin designates this day every year as the “Shari-e” and holds the public viewing, once a year.
One day a year, the doors of the Reliquary Hall open.
We hope you will take this opportunity to quietly reflect on the history of prayer handed down at Rokuouin.
We sincerely look forward to your visit.
